Every few months someone in a Phuket group chat shares a rendering of the light rail line and asks whether it is worth waiting for before choosing where to live. Short answer: no.
Here is the actual timeline. The feasibility study wraps up around the middle of this year. It then goes to the Transport Ministry, the state enterprise office, the PPP committee and finally the cabinet, a chain that runs from July 2026 into early 2027. Bidding follows through to 2028. Construction is expected to start around September 2028, with trains running by December 2031. That is five years of paperwork and diggers before anyone rides it.
What is actually happening sooner is road work. The 650 million baht widening of Highway 4027 between Thalang and Ban Muang Mai is due to finish this year, and a set of underpasses is planned around Thalang, Srisunthon and the Ko Kaeo junction. Useful eventually. Noisy and disruptive in the meantime.
So the practical advice has not changed. Choose where you live based on where you actually spend your week, not on a transport map that will not exist until the decade turns. If you cowork in Old Town twice a week, living in Bang Tao means an hour each way in high season. If your kids are at school in Thalang, that is the anchor, not the beach.
This comes up constantly in the Digi Yesmads community, usually from people three weeks into island life who have just discovered what the Patong to Phuket Town run feels like in January. Pick your commute first. Everything else on the island is negotiable.
