The era of casually stringing together visa exemptions in Thailand is over. If you are planning to stay long term, the paperwork now has to be real.
The headline change is the end of the generous 60-day visa exempt entry that a lot of people quietly built their lives around. Border runs as a lifestyle strategy no longer hold up.
The DTV remains the strongest option for most remote workers. Five years, multiple entry, 180 days per entry, extendable once at a local immigration office for another 180. That is close to a full year on the ground before you need to leave. The visa fee sits around 10,000 THB.
What has hardened is the evidence. Immigration now wants clean proof of employment or client income and savings documentation that has not been edited, cropped or reformatted. Anything that looks altered gets rejected outright. Location verification has also become normal: expect to show a utility bill or licence matching the country of the embassy you apply through.
The one that catches people out most: you cannot apply from inside Thailand. The e-visa system flags IP addresses and GPS data on upload. Applying from a Phuket cafe will fail.
This comes up constantly in the Digi Yesmads community, usually from someone three weeks from an expiry date with a plan that no longer works. The soft power category has tightened too, so the Muay Thai or cooking course route now needs proper documentation from an approved institution.
None of this makes Thailand harder to live in. It makes it harder to live in accidentally.
Check your dates now, not in the final month. And verify anything visa related with a licensed professional before you act on it.
